Error Codes

Every job call returns an integer value: 0 means success, any other value an error (see Introduction). This page collects the error codes documented so far in a central place, grouped by meaning.

This overview is new and not yet complete. It contains only error codes that are described elsewhere in the documentation or derived from concrete implementations, and is extended continuously. The absence of a code does not mean it cannot occur.

All codes are integer (INT) return values of the same mechanism. They are usually not job-specific but apply across the job calls (e.g. dms.XMLInsert, dms.XMLUpdate, dms.XMLImport, dms.GetResultList, check-in/check-out). The Code column lists the decimal return value (signed 32-bit integer). The Jobs column notes the triggers verified against a enaio® server.

1. Job-Dependent Specifics

The following observations were verified directly against a test server and should be considered when evaluating return values:

  • The same cause yields a different code depending on the job:

  • dms.XMLImport reports XML structure errors as a generic -1. The actual diagnosis is only available in the DMSResult buffer, not in the return value. dms.GetResultList, in contrast, returns specific codes (-1016 / -1029).

  • Each server namespace has its own codes for parameter errors. The dms. jobs return small, documented codes (-1024 / -1025) or -1; std., mng., wfm. and krn.* instead return large, HRESULT-style values (see Parameter Errors by Namespace).

  • No-error cases: Some jobs still return 0 for a functionally negative answer — the result is in the output value, not in the return value. Examples: dms.GetUserData and dms.IsUserData with an unknown name; dms.GetObjectTypeByID with an ObjectID that does not exist (ObjectType = -1, no entry in the error stack); krn.VerifyPassword with a password that does not satisfy the password syntax rule (Matches = false); ado.ExecuteSQL with invalid SQL (return_code = 0 and an empty result — the SQL error is swallowed, so error detection must not rely on the return value here); mng.GetUserRoles with an unknown, syntactically invalid or null UserGUID (return_code = 0 and an empty Result — an empty result therefore does not necessarily mean "user has no system role"); lic.CheckLicense when none of the requested modules is available (Result = 602, reason in the error stack, see Diagnostic Entries with Return Value 0); lic.LicGetQueueStatus with unknown module labels (empty file).

  • Functional rejection as an error code instead of an output value: krn.CheckUserAccount documents the verdicts "user unknown", "wrong password" and "account locked" as values of the output parameter Action, but in practice returns them as error codes (-1042218023, -1042218021, -1042218019). A caller must therefore not check Action alone.

  • Configuration-dependent findings: dms.XMLMove can enforce a server-side configured target capacity (-89 when exceeded). -1012 (moving a register into one of its own children) was not reproducible on the test server — the move was allowed with return_code = 0; this behaviour is therefore not guaranteed.

2. Parameter Errors by Namespace

Each server namespace returns its own codes for parameter errors, grouped by error class. The dms. jobs return small codes documented in this list; the other namespaces (std., mng., wfm., krn.*) instead return large, HRESULT-style values:

-1017

An error occurred while validating the XML text.

-1018

The XML text is incomplete.

-1024

A job parameter is missing or has the wrong type. Server message: A required parameter was not specified: … or Parameter <…> has an invalid type: <1> instead of <2>. For dms.RemoveStoredQuery without QueryID the error stack contains -1043332470 and -1042612199.

dms.GetObjectDetails (missing and wrong type), dms.GetObjectTypeByID, dms.RemoveStoredQuery, dms.IsUserData, dms.GetUserData (verified)

-1025

The specified parameter value is invalid or missing. Server message: The specified parameter value is invalid / Missing argument >XML< / …not specified: QueryID. Occurs among other things when the XML parameter is passed as a string instead of binary; the cause then appears as -1042609859 in the error stack.

dms.GetResultList, dms.ExecuteStoredQuery, dms.GetStoredQuery (verified)

-1027

More values were specified for a table field than there are columns.

-1028

An error occurred while inserting the note objects/texts. Among other cases it appears when a text longer than 8000 characters is passed under database note storage (cause -1042611967 in the error stack), and when UPDATE_TEXT hits a note whose text file is missing (cause -1043201745).

dms.XMLInsert, dms.XMLUpdate (verified)

A GUID parameter marked as mandatory is empty (GUID '<parameter name>' is not set).

wfm.GetRunningActivities

-1043201825

Missing or wrong-type parameter in the std.* namespace. Large, HRESULT-style value (see Parameter Errors by Namespace).

std.GetObjectInfo

-1043332470

Missing parameter (A required parameter was not specified: <name>.). Large, HRESULT-style value — this is the server kernel’s generic parameter validation and occurs for arbitrary jobs, primarily in the mng./wfm./krn.* namespaces (see Parameter Errors by Namespace).

mng.GetUserAttributes, mng.SetUserAttributes (call with only UserGUID and Locked), wfm.GetWorkflowList, krn.EnumRJCJobs (RJC introspection without IPAddress1/IPAddress2), krn.VerifyPassword and krn.CheckUserAccount (without Password), lic.LicCheckThreshold (without Modules), krn.NameSpaceGetJobsInfo (with NameSpaces instead of NameSpace) (verified)

-1042612199

Missing argument, reported by the DMS engine. Server message: Missing argument ><name>< during call of job. A cause code in the error stack, not a return value: it follows -1043332470 there, while the job itself returns -1024.

dms.RemoveStoredQuery (without QueryID, return value -1024) (verified)

-1043332106

Wrong parameter type (Parameter <name> was provided, but has an invalid type: <actual> instead of <expected>.). Large, HRESULT-style value of the server kernel’s generic parameter validation, primarily in the mng./wfm. namespaces (see Parameter Errors by Namespace). In the measured cases the type numbers are reversed compared to the -1024 message (here <2> instead of <1>, there <1> instead of <2>); both wordings were taken from the respective server answers.

mng.GetUserAttributes (User passed as INT), wfm.AdminTerminateProcess (ProcessId passed as INT; the parameter validation rejects the call, nothing is terminated) (verified)

-1043332107

A supplied parameter value is invalid (Parameter <name> was provided, but the value is invalid: <value>.). The second half of the server kernel’s generic parameter validation — unlike -1043332470, the parameter was supplied but its value is unusable (empty string, disallowed value).
Job-specific manifestation: for adm.ServerEventsEnumJobs the requested server-event type is not bound to a job — only job-bound OS events (KernelBeforeJob, KernelAfterJob, JobBeforeObject, JobAfterObject) can be queried. Global / per-session events (OnObjectHistoryEntry, OnSessionLogin) return this error.

adm.ServerEventsEnumJobs (non-job-bound event), krn.VerifyPassword (empty Password) (verified)

-1043332815

Unsupported parameter value in the krn.* namespace (info number not supported). Large, HRESULT-style value (see Parameter Errors by Namespace).

krn.CheckUserAccount (verified)

-1040908085

The specified user was not found. Server message: User not found. Requested user name: <value>. The job expects the username; a user GUID also leads to this error.

mng.GetUserAttributes (unknown username or GUID in User, measured on 12.0 and 10.10) (verified)

-1042218742

The specified registry entry does not exist.

krn.REGetRegValue (verified)

-1042218753

For lic.LicGetModuleInfo (component GetASLicString, with the comment Please check the entries in the OS resources table.) the module has no license entry or the label is unknown; on 12.0, Flags = 1 avoids the error (see Modules Without a License Entry).

lic.LicGetModuleInfo (verified); adm.ResourceGetState without ResourceType (component ResourceLock) (observed)

-1043201745

The given note does not exist. Server message: Note (ID = 0x…) was not found. Besides an unknown note ID this also happens when the note exists but its text lives in the database: the three std remark jobs only find note files (see storage of notes). Likewise for dwObjectType = 32767 instead of the object type of the DMS object.

std.GetRemark, std.DeleteRemark (verified)

Copying objects with key fields is not allowed.

-1070

dms.XMLImport (source comment)

-1040906168

The user profile cannot be removed. Server message: Unable to delete the profile, because it is still used by users or groups. Operation canceled. Triggered by writing a user who has their own profile (profil = 0) with geaendert="0" — the server reads that combination as "drop the profile". The whole job is cancelled, nothing is changed.

mng.SetUserAttributes (verified)

-1042611991

The given page number of a multi-field is outside the permitted range. Server message: During insertion of a value into multi-field <Name>, the given page number was found to be out of the allowed range. Permitted is 1 to the file count of the object (see <MultiFields>).

dms.XMLInsert, dms.XMLUpdate (verified)

-1042610069

Index data were specified for a document to be inserted without a type. Server message: The document should be sent to the DMS without type, but index data have been specified for the document. With TYPELESS=1 the body must not contain a <Fields> element.

dms.XMLInsert (verified)

-1042611918

The main type is missing on a typeless insert. Server message: The document should be added without type to the workflow or user tray, but no main type was specified. maintype has to be on the <Object>, not on the <ObjectType>.

dms.XMLInsert (verified)

-1042610059

The object type cannot be determined. Server message: There is not enough information to identify the object type. If the object should be typeless, it must be set as such. For a typeless object TYPELESS=1 has to be set.

dms.XMLDelete (verified)

-1042609917

A note link with text was rejected. Server message: There are object links with text specified in the notes, but according to the server settings, only object links without text can be imported. Depends on a server setting; the same link without text content is accepted.

dms.XMLInsert, dms.XMLUpdate (verified)

-1042609859

The XML job parameter was passed as a string instead of binary. Server message: The job parameter XML contains XML and may not be a string in unicode systems - it should be given as a binary parameter. The job aborts, no result document is delivered.

dms.GetResultList and every job with an XML parameter (verified)

-1042609854

A value of a text type was requested with OutputUnicode = 0. Server message: Under Unicode systems the job 'GetUserData' is not allowed anymore for text values, use the job 'GetUserDataAsString' for text values instead. dms.GetUserData returns -1 in this case; for dms.GetConfValues the message names a job GetConfValuesAsString. For dms.GetConfValues the type decides, not the content: 2 and 3 are blocked, also for an empty value, and a call with a blocked type in ConfTypes fails entirely. Pass OutputUnicode = 1 or use dms.GetUserDataAsString or dms.GetConfValuesAsString.

dms.GetUserData, dms.GetConfValues (types 2 and 3, including the AS.INI) (verified)

-1042612061

A field named in the query does not exist on the object type. Triggered by an unknown internal_name in <Fields> as well as by sortpos on an unknown field. The job aborts.

dms.GetResultList (verified)

-1042611967

The maximum field length was exceeded. Server message: The maximum field length (8000) of field >MEMO< is exceeded by value (…). Appears in the error stack of -1028 when a note text longer than 8000 characters is to be written under database note storage. The server does not truncate, it aborts.

dms.XMLInsert, dms.XMLUpdate (verified)

-1042609876

The OS event already exists. Server message: Os event already exists. Event code: <code>; Class name: <class>; Parameters: ><params><. A cause code in the error stack, not a return value: the job itself returns -1, and the error stack only adds 1104151584 without diagnostic value. The combination of EventCode, OsClassName and OsEventParams must be unique.

dms.CreateOsEvent (return value -1) (verified)

6. Access Denied

Code Meaning Jobs

-47

The user does not have the required rights on the archive server.

dms.ModPortfolio (non-existent folder in PortfolioXML; the rights check precedes the existence check)

-1003

An attempt was made to set a read-only field.

-1008

A requested file could not be accessed.

-1023

The specified system field cannot be changed by the user.

-1026

It is not possible for the user to disable the rights check.

-1065

The specified password is incorrect. Server message: The password entered by user >…< does not match….

krn.SessionChangePassword (wrong old password) (verified)

-1042218021

The supplied password is invalid. Server message: Invalid password. Occurs both for a wrong password and for a wrongly encoded one (plaintext instead of an encoded value). Corresponds to the documented output value Action = 4 but is returned as an error code.

krn.CheckUserAccount (verified)

-1042218019

The user account is locked. Server message: Your user account is blocked. Please contact your system administrator. Returned for a manually locked account as well as for one locked by failed logins — also with a correct password; the two cases are not distinguishable from the response. Corresponds to the documented output values Action = 3 / 5 but is returned as an error code.
The two cases are distinguishable through the user attribute locked (1 = manual, 2 = by failed logins; see Lockout Behaviour) and through the error stack of a context switch: a manual lock returns -1042218150 with the same message there, whereas a lock caused by failed logins returns -1042218334 or -1042218331 (see Cause Codes in the Error Stack).

krn.CheckUserAccount (verified)

-1042218022

The calling user lacks system role 72 (Server: Switch job context, R_SRV_SWITCH_CONTEXT). Message: The system role R_SRV_SWITCH_CONTEXT is not present. The role is necessary and sufficient and independent of every other role.

krn.CheckUserAccount (verified); job calls using $$$SwitchContextUser*$$$ (see Switching the User Context)

-1066

The new and old passwords are identical.

-1069

Access to a system resource was denied.

dms.GetObjectDetails (rights check before ID check) (observed)

-1042674726

The LIS license is missing although OSFTS is used with intrafind.

vtx.OpenObjectQuery

-1040906164

The calling user lacks system role 4 (Administrator: Configure security system). Message: User {username} does not have permission to configure the security system. Please contact your administrator.
With an active context switch the role is checked on the target user, not on the logged-in account.

Modifying mng jobs for users and groups (e.g. mng.CreateUser); mng.GetUserRoles with the UserGUID of another user (verified)

31523546

The calling user lacks system role 109 (Server: Execute script, R_SRV_SCRIPT_JOB). Message: Job <krn.RunScript> can only be executed by a user who owns the system roles [R_SRV_SCRIPT_JOB(109)]. The value is HRESULT-style encoded (0x1E102DA); the low word 0x2DA (730) carries the actual error.

krn.RunScript (verified)

7. Collective Codes with the Cause in the Error Stack

Two operations check a user account without naming the reason for the rejection in the return value: the context switch via $$$SwitchContextUserName$$$ or $$$SwitchContextUserGUID$$$ (see Switching the User Context) and the login with krn.SessionLogin. Both return a collective code; why access failed is available in the error stack only.

Code Meaning Jobs

-1043332467

Collective code: the context switch is not possible. The code originates solely from resolving the $$$SwitchContext…$$$ parameters and is identical for all causes — it does not distinguish a deleted target user from a blocked or expired one. The cause is in the error stack (see Cause Codes in the Error Stack).
The code does not relate to a job’s functional user parameters (such as UserGUID of mng.GetUserRoles).

Arbitrary jobs with a context switch — verified among others with mng.GetUserRoles, mng.GetUserList, krn.GetServerInfo and krn.VerifyPassword (verified)

1105265282

Collective code: the session login was refused. Server message: Login for user <name> (session <guid>) could not be executed, error: <inner code>. The value is positive and HRESULT-style encoded. It is identical for a wrong password, a manually locked account and one locked by failed logins — the cause is in the error stack (see Cause Codes in the Error Stack).

krn.SessionLogin (verified)

7.1. Cause Codes in the Error Stack

The actual cause is carried by the first evaluable entry of the error stack (on the error stack see Introduction); entries without diagnostic value are listed under Entries Without Diagnostic Value and are to be skipped when evaluating.

Code Server Message State of the User

1105265591

User GUID <X> is unknown. Context switch is not possible.

Does not exist or has been deleted (verified)

-1042218150

Your user account is blocked. Please contact your system administrator.

Blocked (locked) (verified)

-1042218334

User account <name> locked. Login is not possible. — the name reads ? where the job cannot resolve it

Locked by failed logins; the locked attribute still carries the marker 2 (see Lockout Behaviour) (verified)

-1042218331

Login failed three times.

Locked by failed logins, after a write with mng.SetUserAttributes has replaced the marker locked = 2 with 0 (verified)

-1042218315

Login for user <X> valid up to <point in time>.

Validity expired (validto in the past) (verified)

-1042218317

Login for user <X> is valid from <point in time>.

Not yet valid (validfrom in the future) (verified)

The server message always says "User GUID", even when switching by user name:

  • with $$$SwitchContextUserName$$$ the name appears in place of the GUID (User GUID NOPE_XYZ is unknown),

  • with $$$SwitchContextUserGUID$$$ the server does not echo the GUID at all — the message then reads User GUID is unknown with an empty spot.

The message is therefore unsuitable for recovering the addressed user.

7.2. Entries Without Diagnostic Value

Every rejected response additionally contains entries that carry no indication of the cause. An evaluation of the error stack should skip them and treat the first remaining entry as the cause.

Code Content

-1043333107

SEH exception thrown at 0x…: 0xC0000005, access violation including a stack trace. Part of the server-side error path, not an indication of its own (verified)

1104151584

Empty message (verified)

30408714

Memory statistics of the server process (VirtualBytes=…) (verified)

The order of the entries in the error stack was stable across all measurements but is not guaranteed. An evaluation should search the error stack for the known cause codes instead of relying on a fixed position.

8. Diagnostic Entries with Return Value 0

Some jobs return 0 and still put entries into the error stack that explain a functionally negative finding or warn about a condition. These codes are not job failures; error handling that only checks the return value does not see them.

Code Meaning Jobs

1105265534
